WAGING WAR FOR THE FUTURE GENERATION: CHRISTIAN EDUCATION AND THE DECLINE OF THE CHURCH

Over the past five years, Grace Baptist Church Aberdeen has focused significantly on education, working tirelessly to establish two Christian schools in the city. The Church must actively engage in and fight for this vital area of spiritual warfare because future generations are at stake. To advance in this conflict, we must accurately assess our current situation and understand how we arrived here.

Currently, in our city and across Scotland, the vast majority of children whose parents are professing Christians from Reformed and evangelical churches are enrolled in state education. One of the key issues with this concerning trend is that many of these Christians do not recognise or do not want to acknowledge the problem. The Bible provides clear, consistent guidance for fathers and mothers on raising their children (Deuteronomy 6:4-9, Proverbs 22:6, and Ephesians 6:4) and warns against letting them be educated by those who do not share our beliefs. For example, Deuteronomy 18:9 states, “When you come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominable practices of those nations.”

Our nation has adopted abominable practices that are aggressively and deliberately taught within our state schools. What does this consist of? A world that happened by chance, where science has overtaken religion, no longer to be questioned but believed. And yet science has no place for defining your identity; that is something you can decide, regardless of age or parental interference. Every group and identity must be respected in the name of diversity and tolerance, which seeks to erode and attack any sense of our Christian identity and Biblical worldview. This is the judgement of God against our nation. However, the swift departure from God’s Word within the state schools has not been met with a corresponding removal of our children from such environments. As each generation becomes more indoctrinated by secular ideas and godlessness, the influence of God’s Word diminishes. And what one generation tolerates, the next one embraces.

We are continuing to witness a generational decline within the church. Church attendance continues to plummet as significant percentages of those raised in 'Christian homes' have abandoned Christianity. Growing numbers of churches are now apostate, and many evangelical and even Reformed churches are becoming increasingly liberal, lukewarm and doctrinally vague. This has included the mother being taken out of the family home, allowing children to be educated by the state, and permitting the inclusion of weak or biblically unqualified pastors and deacons, while evangelism becomes diluted into a non-confrontational approach. Many of these key issues are left unaddressed because the accepted standard of 'conservative Christianity' has been diluted, and the Church becomes more unable to stand and fight (Ephesians 6:12).

Scotland has a rich history rooted in Scripture, where education was closely aligned with God's Word. Unfortunately, those times have long passed. Engaging with the lost in our nation through the Gospel is crucial. One fundamental way to achieve this effectively is by providing our children with an education consistent with Scripture. We must focus on raising a generation that is more biblically literate than we are, as this can help address and shape our otherwise godless society.

The Word of God has the power to save souls through God’s grace—this is the essence of the Gospel and its ability to transform culture. However, we must recognise that we are engaged in a spiritual battle and need to be prepared to fight. This is why our church is establishing Dóxa Theó Christian School. We believe such a school is necessary and will be a blessing to our city. It is our prayer that increasingly churches and Christian families will understand the serious issues we face and support this initiative in recognising its importance for advancing Christ's Kingdom as we battle against the great abominations in our nation and schools.
